Advice on reference letters

I love to write letters for my students. However, I teach about 200 students per year. Let’s make sure we are a good fit for each other so that you can get the best possible letter.

First you need to decide if I would be a useful reference. Can I speak with detail about your accomplishments in my course(s)? Can I clearly link these accomplishments to whatever preparation would make you successful in the program to which you are applying? Did you often litigate grades on your assignments? Did you frequently replace coming to class with office hours? If you sought my feedback on draft work, did you use it?

Having answered those questions, I will need a few things from you:

  1. Short statement of why you want to apply to the program that needs my letter.
  2. Your transcript.
  3. Your resume.
  4. Short statement of what in your resume you think I should consider when writing.
  5. List of courses you took with me.
  6. Short statement of why you think you did well in that/those course(s).
  7. Graded copies of your strongest work from those courses.

Then I need at least two weeks to think about, write, and revise your letter.
