I lost a friend this week.
John and I had known each other loosely since 1997. We got close just after the pandemic. It was a rough time, and I looked forward to seeing him. “Good to see you, man,” he’d say. John was a source of encouragement. He knew how to find the good in people.
We talked mostly about politics, political history, Regina (Saskatchewan), and Québec. Increasingly, we discussed American culture. John had been active in Libertarian circles but was far from doctrinaire. He also understood and cared about local politics. Some of our recent conversations centered on what I might call “good government with a heart.”
There was a good dose of humor. If ever the envelope was pushed, I take full responsibility.
“Press ‘3’ for independent.”
